About this course

Context trains perception. Practice determines what remains.

Most of what shapes how we think never makes it into the content of our thoughts. The room, the light, the people present, the time of day, the last thing we read: this ambient stack quietly decides what we notice, what we ignore and what we believe is possible.

Context Engineering treats that stack as something you can read and rewrite, on purpose. It moves you from content-first to context-first: instead of asking what to think about something, you learn to ask what field is producing the thinking. *The room is part of the cognition, not a container for it.*

The course is practical. Each module pairs a frame with a small, repeatable experiment you run in your own life: turn a chair toward a window, take a walk before a meeting, change one variable before a call, and notice what changes in your thinking, not only in your mood.

Who it is for

  • Designers and facilitators of immersive, ritual or learning experiences, who want every element of a setting to work as an instrument.
  • Researchers, teachers and studio leads who stage labs, classrooms and studios for better attention.
  • Anyone whose creative work has gone flat, who faces difficult conversations, or who is coming back from intense states and wants a steadier ground.

About Professor Carl H. Smith

Carl Hayden Smith is Associate Professor of Media at the University of East London, founder of the Museum of Consciousness, co-founder of Cyberdelic Nexus, and leads the Feÿtopia Hyperhuman lab in Burgundy. Over three decades he has studied consciousness through practice, fieldwork and research: sound, breath, psychedelics, immersive media and designed context. He is FRSA and FHEA, with more than 65 publications, and was the first research subject to sustain the full five doses in Imperial College London's extended-state DMT (DMTx) pilot. He has spoken at TEDxOxford, SXSW London and the Barbican.

His frameworks, Context Engineering among them, are at contextology.org.

            Knowledge you'll gain3 points
            • What context engineering is, and why the room is part of the cognition
            • The ambient stack: physical space, social field, time, information and setting
            • How context engineering connects to Holotechnica and Double Consciousness
            Perspectives that may shift3 points
            • From content-first to context-first: asking what field is producing the thinking
            • Technology as a scaffold for the mind, not a substitute for it
            • Context as something you take part in, not a background you sit in
            Skills you'll develop3 points
            • Read a space as if for the first time, and name what you would change
            • Shift one ambient variable and observe the effect on your thinking
            • Stage a room, a meeting, a classroom or a studio for better attention

            Frequently asked

            When does the course open?

The course is being prepared with Professor Carl H. Smith. Join the waiting list and you will hear the day it opens, before anyone else.

            How much will it cost?

The price is announced with the opening. Members of the Nexus get the member rate.

Do I need a background in neuroscience or design?

No. The course starts from your own experience of spaces and routines, and builds the frame from there.
